Sony Group Engineer Tomoya Okazaki  won a gold medal and finished 4th out of 929 teams in the “Image Matching Challenge 2024 – Hexathlon” held on Kaggle.

The aim of this competition was to build accurate 3D maps from multiple scenes, known as “Structure from Motion (SfM).” The challenge included scenes that are difficult to reconstruct into 3D models with conventional technology, such as transparent objects, combinations of aerial and ground shots, and natural environmental textures such as trees. Participants were required to construct algorithms that accurately determined the positional relationship of the camera at the time of shooting for these scenes.

Okazaki’s solution improved the accuracy of the model by developing models specialized for transparent objects and performing image matching to absorb differences in shooting conditions. Find more details about the solution here.

Member Comment:
After many trials and errors, I am pleased that I was able to construct the algorithm and finish in 4th place overall. I learned a lot not only from the research and experiments during the competition, but also from the solutions presented by other teams after the challenge. I would like to utilize the knowledge and experience gained this time for future research and development.
