Sony Group’s engineers won a gold medal in the AI competition on the platform ‘Kaggle’

A team of engineers from Sony Group won the gold medal in the HMS – Harmful Brain Activity Classification competition held on data science platform ‘Kaggle‘, beating out 2,767 teams.
Additionally, Sony engineer Ryosuke Saito was promoted to the rank of Kaggle Master, a title awarded to the top 1% of competition participants on Kaggle to date.

The competition focused on detecting brain activity indicative of seizures or brain damage through the automatic analysis of EEG (electroencephalography) data. EEG data analysis aids physicians and brain researchers in administering treatment more quickly and accurately. Our team approached this challenge by reconfiguring one-dimensional time series signals into two-dimensional images for learning and combining this with learning approaches for images obtained through frequency transformation of the signals. We were honored and delighted  to win this competition.  “Kaggle Club” is an employee-led, cross-group community initiative within Sony. The insights gained from this experience can be applied to  our research and development in signal processing. Moving forward, we plan to broadly utilize these insights and implement them throughout Sony. Additionally, this victory motivates us to continue participating in various competitions in the future.
